#1. For each side – the two debaters arguing “for” the resolution and the two arguing “against” it…

list the “main points” made by each speaker – these are called “contentions” in a debate.

Try to capture the break down of each contention (subpoints) and catch as much supporting evidence as you can. The contentions should be written in complete sentences. The subpoints and evidence can be in phrases.

Here is a template for your outline of these contentions:

Contention 1:  (One sentence stating the first argument.)

Subpoint A:  (divides or supports contention 1)

Little 1:           (example/evidence and name the source)

Little 2:           (example/evidence and name the source)

Subpoint B:  (divides or supports contention 1)

Little 1:           (example/evidence and name the source)

Little 2:           (example/evidence and name the source)

Little 3:           (example/evidence and name the source)

Subpoint C:  (divides or supports contention 1)

C2:   (One sentence stating the second argument.)

Subpoint A:  (divides or supports contention 2)

Subpoint B:  (divides or supports contention 2)

Little 1:           (example/evidence and name the source)

Little 2:           (example/evidence and name the source)

Subpoint C:  (divides or supports contention 2)

Little 1:           (example/evidence and name the source)

Little 2:           (example/evidence and name the source)

C3:   (One sentence stating the third argument.)     Etc. etc. etc.

#2. During the “discussion” segments, try to summarize the main issue(s) taken up and then state what you think was the outcome of the discussion.

#3. Listen carefully to the closing statements by each person.

At the end of the debate, write a paragraph or two explaining with which side you agree most and articulate specifically why you do. Be specific !

#4. Finally, write a paragraph explaining what specific values are in conflict in this debate.
